F4U Corsair

The famous “bent wing bird” the F4U Corsair was an outstanding fighter during World War 2 having at the time one of the largest engines available, the Pratt Whitney R-2800. The bent wing was necessitated by the tall landing gear which was in turn, necessitated by the huge propeller required to propel the plane at the desired high speed, The Corsair F4U I variant, entered service in 1943 and was armed with six fifty calibre machine guns and had a speed of 425 mph. With a production run of over 12 years the Corsair remained in service with many nations until the 1960’s, and later versions flew their last combat missions in the 1969 “soccer war” between Honduras and El-Salvador. Of the 12,571 Corsairs produced, there are thought to be around 28 still airworthy today.

Hangar 9’s Corsair is reproduced in a generic U.S Navy colour scheme and is probably the best looking semi-scale Corsair A.R.F available. Check out the beautiful flowing curve of the bent wing; an area seldom made correctly in A.R.F models of this type. The Corsair is constructed from the very finest materials using carefully selected balsa and laser cut plywood, combining both strength and lightweight and is beautifully covered in a deep navy blue UltraCote® covering. Pre-installed metal retracts that rotate 90?, just like the full-size, feature along with a pre-painted fibreglass cowl with a dummy radial engine, detailed cockpit, pre-painted canopy and decals.
The Corsair has outstanding flight characteristics and flies the full range of scale manoeuvres with ease and landings and ground handling are just as easy thanks to the wide track undercarriage and steerable tail-wheel. The photo illustrated assembly guide and complete hardware pack make assemble hassle free, and as all of the hard work is done for you this great flying warbird can be combat ready with the minimum of fuss.
Fly it with an Evolution 60 2-stroke up front, you’ll love it!
