The Piper Aircraft Corporation
in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, U.S.A manufactured one of the all
time classic light aircraft, the Piper J3 Cub, and by the time
production had ceased in 1947 with some 14,125 versions made.
Being described as “simple”, “economical”,
and above all “slow”, the J3 Piper Cub is indeed
a classic. During 1938 an improved version of the J3 Cub was
introduced and William Piper took the opportunity to standardise
the colour scheme, just as Henry Fords model T’s were all
black, so William Piper’s Cubs were all bright yellow with
black trim, a colour scheme that is a vibrant now as it was then!
This latest model from Hangar 9 recaptures
the spirit of that bygone age in aviation, offering the
R/C pilot a large scale relaxing and easy to fly model.
The J3 Cub is as much at ease doing slow touch and go's
as it is at being used as a training aircraft; and just
like the full-size handles both of these tasks with consummate
ease.
Thanks to its large size of eighty-inch wingspan and light
wing loading it is capable of taking off and landing at
a realistic scale speed, and of course it has superb slow
flight characteristics.
A lot of attention has been made in getting the Cub to
look as good as it flies.
It is constructed from top quality balsa and C.N.C machined
plywood parts resulting in a rugged, lightweight airframe,
which is then covered in an authentic Piper Cub yellow
colour scheme complete with registration letters using
UltraCote. The scale look is further enhanced by the addition
of a pre-painted fiberglass cowl complete with dummy “Lycoming” cylinder
heads. One piece aluminium landing gear with dummy bungee
suspension and scale Piper Cub “balloon” wheels,
along with bolt on airfoil shaped aluminum wing struts
also features for extra scale realism.
A comprehensive hardware pack, crystal clear windows, and
a fully illustrated assembly guide make getting this Cub
into the air easy and the two-piece wing and bolt on two-piece
tail make transporting this great model to the flying field
even easier.
The Hangar 9 Cub is a delight to assemble and
an absolute joy to fly. |
