Originally
commissioned by the Royal Air Force during 1940 the Mustang
was manufactured by North American Aviation. It went on to
become an outstanding long-range fighter; ultimately powered
by the famous Rolls Royce Merlin engine and having a laminar
flow wing it was capable of escorting bombers deep into the
heart of enemy territory and back again. To say that the Merlin
powered Mustangs were successful would be an understatement.
The P51 became one of the aviation world’s elite, a total
number of 14,819 Mustangs of all types were built for the U.S.A.A.F
and Mustangs destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in Europe to make
them the highest scoring American fighter in that arena. They
were used as dive-bombers, bomber escorts, ground attackers,
interceptors, photo-recon missions, and after the war high
speed high performance racers. However during recent years
there has been a strong swing towards restoring the surviving
Mustangs back to their former glory with authentic markings
of the period.
This P-51D Mustang from Hangar 9’s is
an accurate representation of such a Mustang: “Ferocious
Frankie”
This fully built up model is constructed from CNC machined
plywood and balsa wood parts which results in a rugged lightweight
model. Reinforced in high stress areas such as the landing
gear mounts and main bulkhead it’s covered with Hangar
9 UltraCote® and sports a complete set of authentic markings.
Being 90% pre-built it can be “combat ready” in
as little as eighteen to twenty-two hours.
A set of high quality, metal mechanical retracts
with working oleo legs have been engineered especially for
the Mustang and a pre-painted fibreglass cowl that fits flush
with the rest of the fuselage adds to the outstanding scale
appearance. Also featured in this great model are moulded "Merlin" exhausts
stacks, a pre-painted canopy, and additional scale details
not usually found in ARF models such as working flaps, dummy
bombs and a scale four bladed propeller for static display
use.
The flying characteristics of this Mustang are
exceptional. Having both scale looks combined with the flight
performance of a sport plane it’s capable of emulating
the flight characteristics of the full-size; high "G" dog
fighting turns, low level strafing runs and the most beautiful
slow victory rolls you could wish for. All part of the fantastic
Mustang flying experience
