The
legendary Spitfire has achieved a place in the hearts and minds
of Britons forever. During World War Two this aircraft represented
the “stand alone” determination of the British people
to resist the might of the German Luftwaffe during the Battle
of Britain.
Now some seventy years after the first prototype flew the Spitfire
continues to enjoy even greater affection with aviation enthusiasts
throughout the world. There are many reasons for this, and of course
opinions vary as to why this should be but one overriding thing
stands out above all others. It is a beautiful looking aeroplane!
The sleek fuselage, the magical sound of the Roll-Royce Merlin
engine, the eight wing mounted machine guns, and of course the
elliptical wing. No other aircraft has such a recognisable silhouette
in the sky. It is of course, the Spitfire!
All the grace and performance of the full-size Spitfire have been
captured with this 60 size model. Construction is entirely from
selected balsa and laser cut plywood that ensures a light, rugged
airframe that not only looks right but flies right too. The elliptical
wing has fully functioning split flaps and retracting landing gear
that works in the correct Spitfire direction, i.e. wheels towards
the wing tips. This is a scale detail that is sadly often compromised
in other Spitfire models.
The early two-tone earth and green Battle of Britain camouflage
scheme and markings are faithfully replicated using UltraCote®,
and the pre-painted fibreglass cowling and canopy are accurate
to the MkII variant and with the additional scale parts molded
in fibreglass. The resulting model is a remarkable achievement
for an almost ready to fly model, a true scale rendition of this
aviation icon.
The flight characteristics of the Spitfire are equally impressive:
positive ground handling, superb aerobatic performance, stunning
realism in the air, low strafing runs, beat ups, and gloriously
slow “victory rolls” are all part of the Spitfire experience.
Assembly could not be easier thanks to the fully detailed assembly
guide and the top quality hardware pack that comes with the kit
which includes, wheels, fuel tank, control linkages, control horns,
and all the fixing screws and bolts needed to complete the model.
