North American T-28 TrojanNorth American Aviation (NAA) produced some legendary World War Two aircraft such as the P-51 Mustang fighter, and the B-25 Mitchell bomber. At wars end the United States Air Force tapped into the vast knowledge of NAA for the purpose of developing the next generation of high performance advanced trainers to serve as a successor to the highly successful NAA T-6/SNJ Texan – Harvard. The result was the T-28 Trojan, 1,194 "A" models were built with the Wright R-1300 800 hp engine, and the Aero Product 2-blade propeller. The Air Force used these aircraft for training and various other roles from 1950 to 1956. |
In 1952, the US Navy was so impressed with the rugged Trojan that it contracted with NAA to build an improved version, know as theT-28B. This version came equipped with the more powerful 1425 hp Wright Cyclone R-1820engine, a Hamilton Standard 3-blade propeller, belly mounted speed brake, and many other changes 489 "B" models were built and used from the middle 50's to the middle 80's A T-28C version was also built for the Navy during 1955, being equipped with a tail hook, a smaller diameter propeller, and other minor changes it was able to take off and land on aircraft carriers. |
