The third and fourth round of the BRCA 19turn national series took place at West London with its infamous ‘Douglas D’ which catches some of the best drivers out from time to time and ‘Theos’ which is one of the other corners on the track that catch people out; both of these turns driven correctly can be the key to those ever important fast lap times. The past few weeks before the national allowed for little practice time at the track due to the wet weather, but this was not the case this weekend; sunshine prevailed and perfect conditions and good traction was the order of the day. Despite the presence of a few of the top 19turn drivers, the meeting was always going to be competitive with the likes of Chris Kerswell, Russell Williams, Christopher Delves, Keith Robertson etc… but the favorite for the win this weekend was rounds 1 and 2 winner Chris Kerswell.

The first round of qualifying resulted in three drivers split by less than 0.5 seconds. Christopher Delves at the top of the pile, setting a new lap record, Chris Kerswell in second place and Russell Williams in third. These drivers pulled away from the rest of the pack in this run, being in a league of their own, 7 seconds in front of Stuart Cann at this point of the day. The second round saw no change, which would be of no surprise considering the majority of drivers would save their tyres for either the last round of qualifying or the finals. The temperature at this point had cooled down slightly, but the track still had the heat in it, and provided good conditions for the final round. Christopher Delves was still on pole for the third round and took a gamble and ran his tyres for the third time in a row, opting to have a new set of tyres for the finals. Chris Kerswell on the other hand went for the new tyre option, and in the third round drove brilliantly to take the new track record and FTD of the meeting. Russell Williams was on for bettering his time in the last run, but dropped off towards the end of the run. In a previous heat Richard Thorpe had put his car firmly into the middle of the A final, despite a small mishap coming onto the straight involving the infamous ‘Douglas D’; but well done to Richard for making his first national A final with his RDX PHI (his first outing with the car as well). Steve Lissamore put his car into the final regardless of problems during the day with electronics to give four Horizon Hobby UK/Corally drivers in the finals; showing the strength of the RDX PHI.

In the first leg of the A final, Christopher Delves drove closely behind Chris Kerswell from the start, which after a minute into the race placed him only a second behind him with Russell Williams only two seconds back from Christopher, but Russell made a small mistake allowing both Chris’ to extend their lead over the rest of the pack. Christopher Delves put a charge on to catch his fellow team mate, and as the gap came down the pressure was on Chris Kerswell. At the four minute mark Chris K would make a small mistake, clipping the ‘Douglas D’ unsteadying his car and allowing Chris D to pass him on the straight. Chris K fought hard to come back, but made a few more errors causing him to loose time on Chris D. At the end of the 5 minutes Chris D took the win by 5 seconds from Chris K in second. Russell recovered from his earlier incident to take third from Keith Robertson.

Christopher Delves needed to win this final to take the overall win from fellow team mate Chris Kerswell. From the start Chris D was close behind Chris K, but Russell Williams was put the pressure on Chris D too! A first corner accident between Steve Lissamore and Daniel Fallows put Steve out. He didn’t complete a lap ending the day on a low for Steve who had tried hard to solve his problems through the day. After a minute Chris K managed to pull away from Chris D who had made a few mistakes, getting his car a little too sideways on occasions; this allowed Russell to close the gap, but Stuart Cann had worked his way up from fifth to join the front runners and was racing Russell for third! Russell eventually passed Chris D and so too would Stuart at the half way stage; at which point Chris Kerswell was comfortably in the lead and not about to make any mistakes like earlier. The battle between the three drivers continued with Stuart getting into second and Russell and Chris D dicing for third, with some very tight and tidy overtaking, and also a little door rubbing! Russell slightly clipped the ‘Theos’ turn and rolled his car onto its roof rendering him helpless to defend his third place from Chris D. Russell then defended his fourth position from Richard Thorpe who chased him hard, but Russell maintained his lead by 0.03seconds from Richard! At the end of the 5 minutes Chris K took the victory and with it his second national win, with Stuart Cann in second and Chris D in third giving him second overall at the meeting.

Congratulation to Chris Kerswell for another national win, continuing his dominance and extending his lead of the 19turn national Championship.
Thanks to both Stuart Cann and Niel Mead for the images of the meeting.
