Coming in
to the final round of the championship the standing were
such that I had a considerable lead in the series and
subsequently realised I had already won. Never the less
I still wanted a strong finish and not simply coast the
last round. We travelled down to Stafford the weekend
before the meeting to spend a good day testing on the
Saturday, I felt this was prudent as the grip levels
at Stafford are inconsistent and wanted to get a good
grounding of where the grip was and the most suitable
set up. With this achieved I felt confident for
the following weekend.
On arrival on the Sunday morning the
weather was fairly overcast but no real risk of sudden
downpours. This left tire selection a relatively
simply job for the first round of qualifying. The
first round of qualifying was looking good until I
was a little enthusiastic entering the straight and
got a bit too much air time on the exit curb which
left me fourth. The second qualifying run of the day
started well, as the times were dropping and the car
felt consistent. Even with 2nd fasted time at this
stage the car began to slide ever so slightly at the
back towards the end of the session. On closer
inspection after the heat the tires were not grained
but possibly getting a bit warm. For the third round
I changed to a new set tyres opting for the harder
of the tyre choices. This delivered a more consistent
feel to the car that allowed be to push that little
bit more. But such is the closeness of 27turn
racing that I lined up 4th at the end of qualifying
by a mear 1.6 seconds meaning there was some work to
be done to get the front in the finals.
At the start of the first final I sneaked into 3rd
into the first corner and lay there for the majority
of the race gradually closing the gap on P2. Around
3.5 minutes in P2 man began to loose punch, probable
due to overheating, which gave me the chance to squeeze
through to finish the first leg 2nd.
The second final proved more of a challenge with P3
adopting a more defensive line into the first corner. This
caused me to ride his bumper for the first two minutes
until he ran a tough wide into a corner giving me the
slingshot to fire round the outside of him into the
next and on to pursue P2. P2 proved a lot easier
to pass this time but unfortunately I could have done
which an extra 30 seconds to catch and pass P1.
So in the end I finished second in the
meeting but more importantly won the championship. The
Corrally Phi has proved to be a subtle yet extra ordinary
development of the RDX that simply oozes quality and
driver confidence. |
