After winning
the first round of the series I was full of confidence
going into this round. The rubberised running surface
used for the track up in Sheffield is quite unique and
extremely challenging from both a setup point of view
and a driving style required.
During the ever busy
warm up / practice drivers were busy trying to get
some track time in on the new layout and get a feel
for the grip levels. As usually is the case the track
was very slippy primarily because it was cold as well
as being dusty, not a great combination!
In order to acquire as
much grip as possible the tire warmers were working over
time before Q1, running at near 80degrees. Q1 was very
much a keep it clean and consistent and save the tires.
At this point I was lying 2nd overall which was encouraging
as it was a relatively gentle run. Q2 highlighted the
increase in traction as the track warmed up and began
to become clean. Unfortunately I had a few issues with
stray back markers and was unable to improve on Q1. Due
to the now high grip levels and the closeness of the
racing, a good run in Q3 was essential. Nearly all the
top ten improved and I lined up 3rd on the grid for the
two leg finals.
Both finals proved extremely
close between myself and Tim Wood, whose usually more
at home driving his 1/8th Serpent but was running their
new 1/10th touring car for this event. I ended the day
with a 2nd and a 3rd which meant 3rd overall for the
day.
So with this strong result
coupled with a win at the previous event I’m confident
the Corrally RDXphi will have another strong championship
position.
